Birthday Time with Catherine!

Happy cake day to me! Just had a birthday over the weekend and all my dreams came true! Shopping, shoes, friends, food and most importantly cake. What is a birthday without one?

OMG! Not just any cake, a Fionna and Cake... CAKE! Characters originally designed by Natasha Allegri for the gender swap episode of Adventure Time with Fionna and Cake. Actual cake was made by Two For Two Cakes creator Alison Okabayashi. If you are wondering what the cake was made of, it was moist red velvet cake with creamcheese icing/filling and buttercream frosting and fondant.

I thought I was going to freak out with joy when I saw them bring it out. It was so perfect. Kyle, my husband, did an amazing job with the sketches and working with Alison. I am so humbled to be his wife as well as to be blessed with such an amazing group of friends to share this delicious creation! I almost didn't want to eat them, but cakes were meant to be eaten and shared with loved ones. @^_^@ !!!!

Of course as if cake wasn't enough, my friends were so lovely to have doodled on our party table and gave me cards!

ARTIST BIOS:

John Allison

Self taught artist and non-self taught writer John Allison accidentally became one of the first webcomic artists with his daily Bobbins strip starting in 1998. He rose to prominence in 2002 with Scary Go Round, which ran for seven years and spawned eight printed collections. During this time he designed a lot of tshirts that people really liked, and a few that people just didn't understand at all. Despite giving away almost everything he has ever drawn for free on the internet, he's earned a living for eight years this way. His current project is called Bad Machinery and it's about mystery solving children. You'll like it!

Scott Campbell

Scott C is sometimes known as Scott Campbell. His watercolor paintings can be found in magazines, comics, children's books, video games, and galleries around the world. The GREAT SHOWDOWNS and Double Fine Action Comics are his two internet ventures. GREAT SHOWDOWNS are a series of cute little smiling watercolor paintings depicting famous moments of tension in film. Double Fine Action Comics is a weekly webcomic strip telling the tales of various little characters, including a Knight, Muscleman, and 2-headed Baby. Some of his non-internet projects include the children's book Zombie In Love from Simon&Schuster, and the video games Psychonauts and Brutal Legend from Double Fine Productions. A newly released art book from Insight Editions entitled AMAZING EVERYTHING collects many of his paintings to date. Scott lives in New York City in a building made of bricks.

Rebecca Clements

Rebecca Clements is a cartoonist/illustrator based in Melbourne, Australia. She has several webcomics including KinokoFry, Me and G, and Secret Mystery Diary, as well as a kids comic,Ruffle Hall. Her work tends to be cute, colorful, full of chickens, ladybugs and bees and other such things, and full of charm and imagination. Her diary comics are as imaginary as often as they are true. She has a strong enthusiasm for environmental sustainability, social justice, etc and this comes across in her work (in particular, The Donation Project which aims to encourage people to support the things they want to exist in life, and BEC, a TED-inspired social comic featuring ideas from her readers about how they've improved their lives). Tea drinking, video games and children's books are large sources of inspiration.

Rebecca lived and worked in Japan for a number of years before becoming a full-time cartoonist. She's worked on video games, book illustration, animation storyboards and many other things. She is currently working on a children's book. She wants to see you smile.

Audra Furuichi

Hailing from sunny Honolulu, Hawaii, Audra Furuichi and Scott Yoshinaga are the co-creators of nemu*nemu, an original online webcomic that has been running since 2006. The duo are inspired by not only anime and manga, but Saturday morning cartoons, Sunday funnies, and a good dose of "small kid time" nostalgia.

nemu*nemu follows the charmed lives of two tween girls, Ani and Kana, and their magical stuffed toy pup pals, Anpan and Nemu. Their adventures go just about anywhere imagination can take them; including (but not limited to) the skies via a flying box, a water world guided by an over-sized duck, and outer universes with another mysterious pup named Enchilada and his bird companion, Pollo.

Audra runs the show, publishing new comics tri-weekly while Scott assists in the shadows. She is also a past recipient of the Charles M. Schulz Award for Excellence in College Cartooning for her previous work, CultureSHOCK!.

Andy Ristaino

Andy Ristaino is currently the lead designer on the cartoon network animated show Adventure Time. When not working on animation he can be found drawing comics in his spare time. He has had several graphic novels published through SLG including Escape From Dullsville and The Babysitter as well as had comics printed in numerous anthologies including Popgun vol. 4, Meathaus S.O.S., and Nickelodeon Magazine. Natasha Allegri

Natasha Allegri lives in Burbank, California and works two cubicles down from Andy Ristaino at Cartoon Network on the hit show, Adventure Time. She has a cat named Pancake, who she frequently features in webcomics on her blog, Pancake Pancake Pancake. Pancake likes her pet mouse, things that are smaller than her, and scratching up expensive sofas. Pancake also likes treats, even though they make her FAT.

Nathan Stapley

Nathan Stapley was Born in California, attended Academy of Art in San Francisco, worked as concept artist for Lucas Arts and Double Fine Productions and has been uploading web comics since 2004. He was a member of the comic “collective” Hickee, published by Alternative Comics and has shown his paintings in galleries across the USA since 2005 or so. Nathan Stapley hopes you are doing good.

KC Green

KC Green does the webcomic Gunshow, which is written as one word… usually. He currently resides in Massachusetts, where there's a river he thinks about living in. However, it's too expensive, so he sticks to this hollowed out tree he found. He works as a printer for Topatoco and just ate a bucket of chicken. Why did he do that? He stays up too late.

Michael Jonathan

Michael Jonathan is a twenty-six year old writer/illustrator living in Los Angeles with his awesome girlfriend, Nan Lawson, and two cats, Milhouse and Dodger. He is the creator of Eros Inc., an online comic about cupids living and working in Los Angeles, which has been running since 2008. He is also the creator of the diary webcomic series Michael Jonathan is Jewish, about his somewhat recent trip to Israel, and Quail an indie-folk, kung fu musical. When he's not working on comics, he is an executive/writer's assistant for the MTV show Good Vibes.

Daniel M. Davis

Daniel m. Davis is a Peoria, Arizona based illustrator and co-founder of Steam Crow LLC, creators of Good Monster Goods.

Daniel has been seeing monsters since he was little, and had an "imaginary friend" in the summer of 1973 who promptly stole his pie. Since then he has illustrated, written and published 5 books about imaginary beasties, all crafted in his vintage style. He also creates the MonsterCommute.com webcomic, a dystopian monster adventure.

Daniel is also the founder of Tiny Army, a Phoenix based illustration group dedicated to bringing together local illustrators to share strategies for success.

Sarah Sobole

Sarah Sobole is an artist from Cleveland, Ohio. She just recently started posting her comics online. Sarah is currently drawing Doctor Cat, a weekly webcomic about a cute doctor who happens to be a cat. She also posts a variety of comics on her other website, Cat Ghost.

Kyle Hoyt

Kyle is a San Francisco based designer, illustrator and co-founder of the wickedly whimsical character goods company, Piximix llc.

He currently writes and draws both the deceptively cute Pixipets and the colorfully gothic Appley Rotten webcomics, and illustrates the spin-off site, Appley Zombie Art, which features brightly zombified versions of icons from the world of literature, film and videogames. Some of his past webcomic work includes the action series, Kaboom Bros., and the fandom comedy,Fan Art. One of the winners of Tokyopop's inaugural Rising Stars of Manga competition, his work has also appeared in multiple illustration books.

In addition to his comic work, Kyle has produced character design, illustration, animation and storyboards for national ad campaigns, prominent consumer and technology brands, and social games. He does not sleep.

Hawaii 2009

Here is a little slideshow of our trip to Hawaii. The weather was hot hot hot, humid and the people were friendly. We enjoyed our mini trip to a some-what mini-japan. We ate a lot of Japanese food, experienced Island Culture, and enjoyed a place that we'll always remember fondly.

Kyle took a watch and his 1950s Peanuts Toys. I took my Kenner and my Jewelry. Mark W (host) saw Kyle and Charlie Brown and he totally interviewed us! We were so shocked/embarrassed because he came out of nowhere! Then when we were getting Charlie Brown appraised, Mark W. ... Stopped by again to talk to us, then the neighboring appraisers started to talk about Charlie and then saw my Kenner and had me explain the toy to Mark W. and did a demo for him of the eye mech!!! Then they appraised my kenner for an awesome price!!! YAAAAY!

Miyazaki was such a delight! He was humble, inspiring, wise, and very very funny! Kelts began the conversation with the Apocalypse and Miyazakisan said, "I know I won't see the Apocolypse in my lifetime, but I like to imagine what it would look like... Sometimes I like to look down at Tokyo and just imagine the water being closer than what it is now..."

He mentioned that a lot of characters where based on his co-workers, or people he knew. All the movies he's ever made were really a labor or love. His goal was to merely make good films

One quote that I'd like to share, that came from audience questions, was about True Love. He said, "After many trials in life, at the end you always find love."

I do have to say his humor was the one thing I will remember about this live interview. He was so hilarious about his work, his family, and his ideas. He likes to share his inspirations with some kind of humor. For example, when he has ideas he tries his best to think of things and when he's stuck he just keeps thinking till he can smell blood. Many of his character designs come from simple things that we can relate to. In Totoro he wanted the character to have the look of something that could be brilliantly smart, or extremely dumb. (haha) If you could see how he explained this, it was wonderful! XOXO

Some of the peers he mentioned were Lasseter, and Aardman. He explained that they had the same views that he did with animation.

There were many other things he said that I wish I could remember right now, but that would mean typing out his whole interview! haha!

This night I was very inspired and I hope to someday make films that inspire others as well.

Thursday Updates

So I feel like I should update this blog more than usual and have more posts than just the random *BIG* travel ones.

First off, Kyle has recently accepted a new job from Slide. He is saying goodbye to Busse and moving on to a more creative position. Besides the new adventures he will be having, we're also glad that it comes with some mighty good benifits! Health, Vision, Dental, and also coverage for travel. (insert happy face here).

Second, Cat will be working on her portfolio. It seriously needs to be updated. Hopefully by the end of this year she should have it done. If that doesn't pull together I plan to complete a comic and an animation based on the comic.

Lastly, Kyle and I are hopefully planning to move into a new place before the end of the year. We'll definitely miss our current apartment but it has become too small for us. We're looking into staying in San Francisco, but in either Inner Sunset area or the Portrero Hill/Dog Patch.

We're hoping to find a 2 bedroom, with a bath, washer/dryer, and garage. It would be nice but not entirely necessary for the washer/dryer. Garage and 2 Bedroom is a must!

Anywho, that's all for now. *PHEW* More updates probably before the end of the month. I have a lovely blythe-meet this Saturday in Berkeley and Kyle is going to meetup with his old friend Nate for lunchies on Friday.

Kyle, who is terribly awesome got me into walking again. I used to do it a lot but have gotten lazy with all the work recently. Since I'm a creature of habit and also very OCDish... he got me this DS Game to help me. Some wives/girlfriends may think this is offensive but I relish in the fact that I get useful gifts. (ie KitchenAid Mixer). =D !!!!

Here is a screen view of today. I did about 9,271 steps! From reading, an active walker does around 10,000 steps a day. REALLY? My feet would be so tired! We tested these pedometers out when we went to the Licensing Expo in Vegas last week and we did a whopping 20,000+ a day! We had to use the hotel jacuzzi daily to ease our feet.

This photo shows our stamps per day. You can chooose Super Happy, Happy, and Sad Face. Usually you get a green face if you meet your set goals and a red face if you don't. I have mine set for 7,000. (Tomorrow will be 8,000). This is the perfect game for me. =D

In combination with better eating and pilates I feel I will be at my goal weight and health my the end of the year. Yay for DH's!

After much driving, Kyle took Saffron and I to the original street in Cincinnati, Ohio where Kenner was originally located.

Can you believe it has been one year already? Time goes so fast and there is still more to come. I can't believe that life could be so fun or so fulfilling.

For Kyle's Birthday spectacular we went to Pizzeria Delfina. We were surprised by the deliciousness they offered. One item to note, they make their sausage and pepperoni. Unfortunately we didn't get a chance to taste the handmade Pepperoni. There is always next time!

Kyle's birthday cake is actually a cheescake I ordered straight from
Junior's in NY. YUM!!! It's made with love and happiness.
(Though it still needs a cherry topping for later).

Kyle and I went to LA last month to do more conventioning.
I also had a small blythe meet @ Mao's Kitchen on Melrose.

I do have to say driving to and from LA without air conditioning was unbearable. I felt like I was withering away into a little raisin.
